MY FIRST DAY IN A NEW LAND
I have decided to write a diary to tell how my second chance in life started with a gruelling journey.
This is my story, I set off from Sierra Leone with all my possessions on my back, leaving behind my name Ayodele to just become a number, and saying goodbye to my family and friends to find a new life in a European land, little knowing the difficulties which lay ahead.
Leaving Africa by boat from Algeria, I felt more fearful than I had ever felt before which crushed the need for food or water.
As the Bay of Napoli came into view, my lifetime’s dream broke into pieces with the storm clouds overhead which felt really distant from the sensation of the sun rays of my dreams.
My first foot on Italian soil, was met by crowds, sirens, people yelling for help, children crying and complete pandemonium.
But all that was overcome by a sense of liberty, freedom and relief.
Within a few hours I was taken to an immigration centre where I had my first taste of Italian food and met the people who would accompany me through the next chapter of my life.
